The lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum) is named for the single white or silvery spot on the back of the adult female. Adult males lack the single dot but have lighter markings along their backs.
If the Tick Is Crawling on You
If it hasn’t attached yet:
Brush it off or remove it carefully.
Check your clothing and body for additional ticks.
Shower soon after being outdoors if possible.
Wash clothing in hot water and dry on high heat.
If the Tick Is Attached
Remove it as soon as possible:
Use fine-tipped tweezers.
Grasp the tick as close to the skin as you can.
Pull upward with steady, even pressure.
Don’t twist, crush, burn, or cover it with petroleum jelly or nail polish.
Clean the bite area with soap and water or rubbing alcohol.
